History On This Day

FEBRUARY 6TH 

On this day in 1892 Royal Arsenal had a friendly against Cambridge University. Jack Graham and Pearson got the goals that gave the Royal's a 2-1 victory.

The friendly today in 1893 was one against a military team when the Royal Lancaster Regiment team turned up in Plumstead. David Howat and Duncan Gemmell both scored in a 2-0 win.

In Division 2 today in 1894 Woolwich Arsenal were away to Rotherham Town where an Arthur Worrall goal kept things even at 1-1. Amateur left winger Tommy Bryan made his debut. He played nine times for the club before moving to play with New Brompton. Another debutante was right back Lycurgus Burrows (picture top left). Lycurgus was another amateur who moved back and forth between Woolwich Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. He played a total of 10 times for the Gunners.

Woolwich Arsenal had a United League match today in 1899 against Kettering at the Manor Ground. James Moir and John Dick both scored and Herbert Shaw got a brace in a 4-2 win.

It was FA Cup Round 1 day at the Manor Ground today in 1904 and the visitors with Fulham and their owner Henry Norris (his first time in contact with the club). Woolwich Arsenal won the match 3-2 against a Fulham side that played in a strip that would later become Arsenal's colours. The Gunners would meet Manchester City in Round 2.

Woolwich Arsenal and Millwall Athletic played in front of 32,000 spectators today in 1909 proving the increasing popularity of matches between local rivals, (the prospect of large crowds sowed the seeds of a move north of the river to be amongst more plentiful 'local' opposition). This Round 2 FA Cup match ended 1-1 thanks to a Charles Lewis goal and the teams would have to meet again in four days.

Leeds City were in London today in 1915. A first opportunity for their manager Herbert Chapman to pit his wits against Arsenal. He would have to rethink things as Arsenal went on to win 2-0 through Frank Bradshaw and Jackie Rutherford goals.

On this day in 1924 future Wolverhampton Wanderers player and Arsenal manager Billy Wright was born. Wright didn't win anything while manager of the club and this was his only managerial position. He was not a master tactician as a gaffer but he did invest in some players that flourished better under Bertie Mee in the future.

On this day in 1926 Arsenal were at Elland Road to take on Leeds United. James Brain scored for the Gunners and Leeds even scored an own goal but the home side went on to win 4-2. Right winger/centre forward Joe Hulme (picture bottom left) made his debut today whilst it was final appearance in an Arsenal shirt for Clement Voysey (picture top right) who started 37 matches and scored 6 goals for the club.

At Goodison Park today in 1932 Bob John, Cliff Bastin and Joe Hulme all scored in a 1-3 Arsenal win over Everton.

Points and honour shared today in 1937. A Robert Davidson goal made it 1-1 at Highbury between Arsenal and Manchester United.

1943 and today Arsenal got another glut of goals at White Hart Lane in their home Football League South match against Crystal Palace. Jack Crayston, David Nelson and Denis Compton all got on the scoresheet while Ted Drake and Reg Lewis both got hat tricks in a 9-0 demoltion.

It ended 0-0 at Maine Road today in 1954 when neither Manchester City or Arsenal could score in their Division 1 match.

On this date in 1960 the Gunners got a 5-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Joe Haverty and David Herd both scored and Mel Charles got a hat trick in a run of four games for the Welshman in which he would score seven times (although he would only score eight goals in a total of 20 matches that season).

A John Radford goal was not enough today in 1965 at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea secured the points with a 2-1 win.

Arsenal were at Leeds Road today in 1968 to play the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Huddersfield Town. The Gunners were 3-2 up from the first leg at Highbury and when Frank McLintock, Jon Sammels and David Jenkins all scored for a 1-3 victory, Arsenal were into their first cup final since 1952 and their first ever League Cup final.

Today in 1971, the first double season, Arsenal returned to form after just one win in their previous four matches. A John Radford goal gave them a 1-0 win at Highbury against Manchester City. With league leaders Leeds United losing two on the trot, the Gunners were now three points behind with a game in hand but slightly worse goal difference.

At Roker Park today in 1982 Sunderland and Arsenal played out a boring 0-0 to share the points.

February the 6th 1982 was also the day that Juan Maldonado Jamaiz (Juan) was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Juan joined Arsenal from his hometown club in 2001 but only made two appearances. His unsuccessful Arsenal career ended in 2004 when he returned to Brazil to play for Fluminense.

The British sports press reported a story from Scandinavia today in 2010. A spokesman from the Norway Arsenal Supporters Club announced that they had lost 300 members in the last month because of the poor performance by the team under Arsene Wenger.

Finally, today in 2015 both Francis Coquelin (picture bottom middle) and Chuba Akpom (picture bottom right) were confirmed as signing extensions to their contracts and youngsters Kaylen Hinds and Ben Sheaf signed their professional papers with the club.

FEBRUARY 5TH

On this day in 1887 Royal Arsenal played only their fifth ever match. They were away to Millwall Rovers and although we have no record of the scorers we do know that the Royals won the match 0-4. It is the first time that the attendance for Royal Arsenal match was recorded and they played in front of 500 people.

The first of numerous club birthdays; Matthew Shortt was born today in 1889 in Dumfries, Scotland. He was only at the club for just under a season in 1910 in which he made four appearances before returning to Scotland to play for Kilmarnock.

Today in 1891 Joseph McLauchlan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He joined Woolwich Arsenal in 1911 as a centre forward and he scored 3 times in his 16 appearances before leaving for Watford in 1913.

In Division 2 today in 1898 Woolwich Arsenal were at the Invicta Ground to face Manchester City. James Brock and Fred Davis both scored in a 2-2 draw. Midfielder Frank McAvoy played the last of his 48 matches in which he scored 10 times. He later moved on to Brighton United.

It was a Round 2 FA Cup match today in 1910 when Woolwich Arsenal made the trip to Goodison Park. 30,000 spectators watched Everton blow Arsenal out of the water with a 5-0 win. It was a final appearance for two players in the match. Centre forward Matthew McKellar only played five times and scored twice. Fullback Arthur Cross on the other hand had played 149 times since joining from Dartford in 1900 and it was there that he returned later that year.

In 1916 today Arsenal were at home in the London Combination League Supplementary. Henry King got the goal that made the final score 1-1 between Woolwich Arsenal and Watford.

Roker Park was not, it seems, the best play to go today in 1921. Billy Blyth did get an Arsenal goal but Sunderland thrashed the Gunners 5-1. Centre forward Fred Pagnam (picture top left) played for the last time. He played 53 matches and scored 27 goals ater signing from Liverpool in 1919 but was sold to Cardiff City for £3,000. Earlier in his career he had testified against his own team mates in the Liverpool/Manchester United match fixing scandal of 1915 and came over as a man of great honour at a time when every dirty trick possible was being pulled.

Right winger come striker Joe Hulme (picture top right) signed on this date in 1926. The England international joined from Blackburn Rovers and went on to play 374 times scoring 125 goals before he moved on to Huddersfield Town in 1938.

1927 and today saw Arsenal at Anfield where they failed to score and lost 3-0 to Liverpool.

Today in 1931 Arsenal were riding high after beating Grimsby Town 9-1 the previous weekend. The euphoria carried on at Filbert Street where they beat Leicester City 2-7. Joe Hulme was on the scoresheet as was David Jack and Cliff Bastin's two goals were only topped by Jack Lambert's (picture bottom left) hat trick.

At Highbury today in 1938 it was another victory for Arsenal after Jack Crayston scored twice and Reg Lewis grabbed a goal in a 3-0 win over Derby County.

In the Football League South today the Gunners lost 4-1 when they made the trip to play Brentford despite Denis Compton's goal kicking things off.

Much better for Arsenal today in 1949 when they beat Highbury visitors Sunderland 5-0. Reg Lewis, Doug Lishman, Archie MacAuley, Ian McPherson and Tom Vallance (picture bottom middle) all found the back of the net.

Although Arsenal weren't playing, Highbury was in use today in 1953. Walthamstow Avenue had an FA Cup replay against Manchester United and requested to use Highbury as their ground did not have sufficient capacity to host the match. (If you cared, they lost 2-5).

Normal service was resumed today in 1955 when Arsenal were at Highbury to face Preston North End. Don Roper and Derek Tapscott got the goals that gave the Gunners a 2-0 victory.

Burnley were in London today in 1966 and they secured a 1-1 draw with Arsenal despite a Jon Sammels (picture bottom right) strike. It was the start of another poor run of 10 without a win, and indeed only two wins between this game and the end the season. Arsenal would end the season in a poor 14th place and Billy Wright would be sacked as manager.

When Arsenal went to Reading to play their fourth round FA Cup tie they may have returned feeling somewhat fortunate. They did win 1-2 to go through but it took a Pat Rice goal and Reading to put through their own net to do it. The Gunners would meet Derby County in Round 5.

Alan Ball scored Arsenal's goal at Elland Road today in 1974 but the Gunners lost the match 3-1 to Leeds United.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst celebrates his birthday today. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1975. He joined
Arsenal in 2001 when Arsenal agreed a fee of £8.5m with Glasgow Rangers. Being able to play at left back and midfield he played in 64 matches and scored twice. After a couple of seasons of ups and downs he was sold to Barcelona for €2m in 2003.

Very little to say about the match in London between Arsenal and Sunderland today in 1977 when it ended 0-0 and points shared.

There were goals at Highbury today in 1983 however. Raphael Meade got a brace and Graham Rix scored in Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Arsenal academy player Jon Toral celebrates his birthday today. He was born in Reus, Spain today in 1995 and was plucked from their academy along with Hector Bellerin in 2011. Injuries somewhat plagued the midfielder's progress initially and a loan deal to Brentford was agreed by the club in 2014. His return in 2015 saw another loan arranged, this time with Championship side Birmingham City where he is flourishing and getting among the goals.

Another academy player was born on this date. Midfielder Ben Sheaf was born in Dartford, England in 1998. He signed for Arsenal's academy from West Ham United in 2014 as a sixteen year old and made a couple appearances in the UEFA Youth League for the Under-19's aswell as his Under-18's duties.

Into the Premiership era and today in 2000 Arsenal were away to Bradford City. Although Thierry Henry scored it was Bradford that ran out 2-1 winners on the day.

Today in 2005 after two defeats in last three games Arsenal stopped the rot with a 1-3 victory at Villa Park over Aston Villa thanks to goals from Freddie Ljungberg, Thierry Henry and Ashley Cole. It started a 13 match unbeaten run to the end of the season.

Finally, at St James' Park today in 2011 Arsenal seemed to have things all sewn up by half time after goals from Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and two from Robin van Persie made it 0-4 in 45 minutes. Neither Newcastle United nor the referee had read the script though and for the first time in Premier League history a side came back from 4-0 down to avoid defeat. It ended 4-4 and Arsenal fans had gone from elation to devastation in the second 45 minutes.

FEBRUARY 4TH 

On this day in 1868 Albert Christmas was born in Wolverhampton, England. He became a Woolwich Arsenal player as a striker after joining Royal Arsenal from Kidderminsterini 1890. After playing 37 times for Royal Arsenal and scoring 20 times, he only made one league appearance for Woolwich Arsenal which was against Derby County in the FA Cup in 1891. He left later that year to join Cray Wanderers.

Today in 1888 on Manor Field Royal Arsenal met north London team Tottenham Hotspur. It was a rearranged friendly as the previous attempt had been abandoned due to fog with Spurs winning 2-1. This time round it ended 6-2 to the Royals. I have no record of all the goalscorers but we do know that Peter Connolly scored four of the goals.

Also on this date in 1888 Thomas 'Pip' Rippon was born in Beighton, Sheffield. He was never signed by Arsenal but the centre forward played for Woolwich Arsenal as a guest player during World War I while officially on the books of Grimsby Town.

It was defeat today in 1892 when Royal Arsenal faced league team Sheffield United at the Invicta Ground. George Davie got a goal but the Blades won the friendly 1-4.

1893 today saw the Royals play Casuals FC (a team made up of ex-public school pupils, mainly Eton, Westminster and Charterhouse). Six goals in the match and four of them went Royal Arsenal's way. James Henderson and Arthur Elliott both scored and Bernard Shaw got the other two.

On this date in 1899 Woolwich Arsenal had a Division 2 fixture at North Road against Glossop North End. Glossop won the match 2-0. John McPhee played his last match for the club. He was only with Woolwich Arsenal a year and made a total of eight appearances, seven in the league and one in the FA Cup.

In Round 1 of the FA Cup today in 1905 Woolwich Arsenal faced Bristol City at the Manor Ground. In front of 25,000 spectators it ended 0-0 and the two sides would meet in Bristol in four days time. It was the last of William Gooing's (picture top left) appearances in an Woolwich Arsenal shirt. The centre forward played 106 times for the club and scored 48 times after joining from Chesterfield on November the 7th 1901. After the signing of Charlie Satterthwaite his opportunities in the first team were limited and moved on to Northampton Town later that year.

Woolwich Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup in Round 2 today in 1911 by Southern League champions Swindon Town. The Gunners were unable to score at the County Ground and went out 1-0. Inside forward John Flanagan (picture bottom left) played the first of 121 matches for the club in which he scored a total of 28 goals. He joined the club in 1910 but retired through injury in 1917 at the age of 28.

On this day in 1922 the Duke of York visited Highbury. In the absence of Sir Henry Norris and William Hall it fell to directors Jack Humble, Charles Crisp and George Peachey to welcome the prince. Newcastle United were the visitors that day and Arsenal ended up winning 2-1 thanks to goals by Joseph Toner and Reg Boreham.

Defeat for Arsenal at Highbury today in 1928. James Brain may have hoped for a better result after his hat trick but visitors Derby County won the match 3-4.

At Goodison Park today in 1933 it ended all square. Ernie Coleman's goal kept it to 1-1 with Everton when the final whistle was blown.

In 1939 on this date Arsenal got a home win against Sunderland. Cliff Bastin and Reg Lewis goals made it 2-0 after ninety minutes. David Pryde (picture top right) made the first of his four official appearances for the club (he did play 27 times during World War II). He joined the club in May 1935 but was quickly sent to nursery club Margate. The winger only played during the war when he was on leave from the R.A.F. and after the war the winger found first team football difficult to come by. He transferred to Torquay United in October 1946.

Anthony 'Tony' Thear was born on this date in 1948 in Edmonton, London. He joined Arsenal as a junior in 1965 and played and in just over year he played 43 matches in all competitions for the youth and reserve sides and helpedw in the Metropolitan League Challenge Cup. He wasn't considered first team material and in 1966 he was released and joined Luton Town.

At St Andrews today in 1950 Peter Goring's goal was not enough to stave off defeat as Birmingham City beat Arsenal 2-1.

This date in 1956 Sunderland were back at Highbury. Arsenal got a 3-1 win after Jimmy Bloomfield scored and David Herd got a brace to pick up the points.

Arsenal made the trip to St James' Park today in 1961. It ended 3-3 with George Eastham scoring and Geoff Strong getting the other two that saved a point for the Gunners. Scotland international wing half Tommy Docherty played for the last time in an Arsenal shirt. He joined from Preston North End in 1958 for £28,000 and went on to play 90 times before leaving to become player/coach at Chelsea.

Chelsea were at Highbury today in 1967. George Armstrong and George Graham scored the goals that gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell celebrates his birthday today. He was born in Lambeth, London in 1970. He joined Arsenal as a 15 year old in 1985 and signed his professional papers in 1988. He made 228 appearances and scored 59 goals before being sold to Nottingham Forest in 1995 for £3m.

In a friendly today in 1975 Arsenal played against an England XI. The international side got the better of the Division 1 team and it ended 0-2 to England.

On this date in 1978 Aston Viilla were at Highbury. After Arsenal failed to score the Villans nicked it with a 0-1 win.

It was another Highbury defeat for the Gunners today in 1984. Once again they failed to get a name on the scoresheet and Queens Park Rangers won the match 0-2.

In 1986 Arsenal were once again in the League Cup. After a 1-1 draw at Villa Park it was back to Highbury today for the replay. Paul Mariner scored but it was Villa that went through after a 1-2 victory.

After he had left for Aston Villa and gone on to play for Everton, Martin Keown (picture middle right) re-signed for Arsenal today in 1993 for a fee of £2.2m.

Into the Premiership era and Arsenal lost 3-1 today in 1995 at Hillsborough to Sheffield Wednesday. Andy Linighan got the goal that only counted for his stats. Tony Adams and John Hartson were both sent off in the match. It was the last time that Arsenal fans would see birthday boy Kevin Campbell in an Arsenal shirt. Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup today in 1997 when they were beaten 0-1 by Leeds United at Highbury. John Hartson (picture bottom right) played his last match. After 71 games in total and 17 goals he moved on to West Ham United for a fee of £3.2m. George Graham also returned to Highbury but on this day he was manager of Leeds United.

Back to the Premier League and today in 2006 the trip to St Andrews ended in a 0-2 victory for Arsenal. Thierry Henry scored and Emmanuel Adebayor got a goal on his debut against Birmingham City. Finally, today in 2012 Arsenal went into their Emirates match against Blackburn Rovers on the back of three defeats and one draw in their last four matches. They needed a win and they got a big one. FEBRUARY 3RD 

On this day in 1872 Roddy McEachrane was born in Inverness, Scotland. Midfielder Roddy joined Woolwich Arsenal from West Ham United in May 1902. In his first season he helped the club gain promotion to Division 1. He stayed with the club until the end of his career at the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and made 346 starts for the club on the left sie of the park.

In 1888 on this date Bill Buckenham was born in Exeter, England. Buckenham worked in the Woolwich Arsenal before joining the army and then joined the club as an amateur centre forward in 1909. In his one season at the club he played 21 times and scored 5 goals. In 1910 he left the club to join Southampton.

Today in 1894 Woolwich Arsenal were at Sincil Bank for their Division 2 fixture against Lincoln City. The home side won the match 3-0. Arthur Worrall played the first of only four starts for the club in his 6 months stay but the centre forward did manage one goal. Left back John Storrs played his last Arsenal match. All in all he managed 16 appearances after joining 1893 when he left the army and leaving in 1895. It was also a final appearance for Charles Booth. Booth was a member of the team that played Woolwich Arsenal's first ever football league match. As an outside left he played 26 matches and scored 10 times. He left later that year to join Loughborough Athletic.

Left half/left back Bob John was born today in 1899 in Barry, Wales. Only 10 players in Arsenal history have made more appearances than John. He joined the club in 1922 from Caerphilly Town and is considered manager Leslie Knighton's finest signing. The Welshman made 470 starts for the club and scored 13 times. He retired at Arsenal in 1937 and became a coach at West Ham United.

Defeat for the Gunners today in 1900 when they failed to score at Ayersome Park and lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough.
At Loftus Road on this date in 1902 Woolwich Arsenal drew 2-2 with Queens Park Rangers in the London League Premier Division. William Gooing and Isaac Owens got the Gunners' goals. The London League proved an unpopular experiment. The crowd of 600 that day showed that they were not impressed by the league although matters were not helped with this game like others kicking off at 2.15pm on a Monday.

In Round 2 of the FA Cup on this date in 1906 Woolwich Arsenal were at the Manor Ground to face Watford. The Gunners won 3-0 through goals by John Coleman, Bert Freeman and Tom Fitchie.

In the London Combination League today in 1917 Arsenal faced an away match against Clapton Orient. It would end in a 2-2 draw with Jackie Rutherford and wartime guest H. Groves getting the Arsenal goals.

David Nelson was born on this date in 1918 in Douglas Water, Scotland. He joined from St Bernards in 1936 for a £200 fee. He was with the club for 10 years but spent the majority of his career in the reserves. He did notch up 29 first team starts where he played as either a centre forward or winger and scored four times. He transferred to Fulham in 1946 as part of the deal that brought prolific striker Ronnie Rooke to Arsenal.

Despite continued rumblings of protest (particularly from Tottenham) the FA today in 1919 still maintained their position that Arsenal should be promoted to the First Division. The four teams nominated to join the expanded devision would remain Arsenal, Chelsea, Preston North End and Derby County.

Defeat for Arsenal today in 1923 at the City Ground. Alf Baker got a Gunners' goal but Nottingham Forest won the match 2-1.

It was another 1-2 defeat for Arsenal at Highbury today in 1926. Charlie Buchan scored this time but it was not enough against visitors Burnley. After joining as an amateur from Luton Clarence in 1924, outside right Herbert Lawson (picture top left) finally made his first team debut. He only played 16 matches for the top side, scoring twice, before transferring to Brentford in 1927.

In 1934 on this date it was the same scoreline again. Visitors Everton won the match 1-2 despite Ralph Birkett's goal. Centre forward Ernie Coleman played his last Arsenal match. He joined in 1932 from Grimsby Town for £7,500. He played 47 times and scored 26 goals but with the signing of Ted Drake his opportunities became limited and he joined Middlesbrough at the end of that season for £2,500.

Nine goals for the spectators at the Baseball Ground today in 1937. The match went Derby County's way it ended 5-4. All Cliff Bastin, Ted Drake and Alf Kirchen's hard work was to no avail. Even the Rams' own goal could only make it four for Arsenal.

Ken Nicholas was born today in 1938 in Northampton, England. As an England schoolboy and youth international he joined Arsenal in 1955. Try as he might he could not forge a way into the first team as a full back and was eventually given a free transfer to Fourth Division Watford in 1959.

Former Arsenal centre half John Snedden was born in Bonnybridge, Scotland today in 1942. He joined the club as an amateur from Bonnyvale. His seven years at Arsenal were hampered by injuries but he managed 94 starts before departing to Charlton Athletic for £150,000 in March 1965.

Arsenal were up against Reading today in 1945 when they were drawn away in the wartime Football League Cup South. A 1-3 Arsenal on the day thanks to a Ted Drake goal and one each from guest players N. Bowden and Billy Wrigglesworth.

No goals at Highbury on this date in 1951, so 0-0 it was between Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Goalkeeper George Swindin (picture bottom left) left the club today in 1954. He joined Peterborough United as player/manager after 297 Arsenal appearances. He returned to Highbury as manager in 1958.

West Bromwich Albion beat Arsenal in London today in 1962. The Gunners failed to score and lost 0-1.

At Maine Road today in 1968 a George Graham goal kept the final score to 1-1 with Manchester City. After signing just the day before Bobby Gould was thrown straight in to make his debut in the match. The Arsenal web site described him as "a willing worker, capable of turning an average pass into a good one by chasing down defenders and forcing mistakes".

Briefly one of Arsenal's former goalkeepers, Mart Poom celebrates his birthday today. He was born in Tallinn in what is now Estonia. He joined the club as 'cover' in 2005 and made his debut against Everton. It turned out to be one of only two appearances before he transferred to Watford in 2007.

Arsenal had an FA Cup fourth round tie at Highbury today in 1973 with Bradford City. Alan Ball and Charlie George did the business for a 2-0 win. It was a final Arsenal appearance for Peter Marinello (picture top right). Dubbed 'the next George Best' he only scored five times in 51 matches for Arsenal and left in July that year to join Portsmouth.

Today in 1979, months before his FA Cup winning goal, Alan Sunderland was already disliked by Manchester United when he scored both goals in Arsenal's 0-2 win at Old Trafford.

The Gunners were at Elland Road today in 1993 for their FA Cup replay against Leeds United. After the 2-2 draw at Highbury this one was another tight match but Arsenal scraped through with a 2-3 win. Ian Wright got two of the goals and Alan Smith round off the narrow victory. Nottingham Forest awaited in Round 5.

Into the Premiership era today in 1996 Arsenal got a 1-1 draw with Coventry City. Dennis Bergkamp got the goal that saved a point for the Gunners. Adrian Clarke (picture middle right) played his final Arsenal match and eventually left to join Southend United on a free transfer. On this date in 2004 Arsenal had their second leg of the Carling (League) Cup semi-final to deal with. After the first leg at Highbury they were 0-1 down to Middlesbrough. Edu weighed in with an Arsenal goal but Middlesbrough won this leg aswell so after the 2-1 victory Boro went through 3-1 on aggregate. It was back to the Riverside stadium today in 2007 but this time for a Premier League fixture. Thierry Henry's goal turned out to be only good enough for a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on this occasion.

Finally, today in 2009 Arsenal finally announced the signing of Andrei Arshavin (picture bottom right) from Zenit St Petersburg. the fee of £15m was at the time a club record and remained so until the Mesut Özil signing in 2013. It was widely reported that the Russian was so keen on the transfer that he hired a private jet to take him to London on the 1st of February for the medical and signing. Arshavin played 144 times for Arsenal and scored 31 goals before ultimately returning to Zenit in 2012.

FEBRUARY 2ND

On this day 1889 at Manor Field Royal Arsenal played against Ilford FC. Saul did score for the Royals but it was Ilford that won 1-2.

Woolwich Arsenal went out of the FA Cup in the first round on this day in 1895. They failed to score in their away tie with Bolton Wanderers and lost 1-0.

31,300 people turned up at the Manor Ground today in 1907 to watch Woolwich Arsenal versus Bristol City in Round 2 of the FA Cup. Peter Kyle and Thomas Hynds scored the goals that gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory and a place in the next round against the blue and white side of Bristol, Bristol Rovers.

In the London Combination League today in 1918 Arsenal were at Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace. The Gunners scored through Jackie Rutherford, Charles Lewis (2) and Doug Lewis to win 1-4.

A Round 2 FA Cup exit for Arsenal today in 1924. Arsenal were unable to find the back of the net and home side Cardiff City knocked them out with a 1-0 win.

It was an FA Cup Round 4 replay for the Gunners today in 1927. After a 2-2 draw at Vale Park a solitary goal by Charlie Buchan settled the tie and Arsenal beat Port Vale 1-0 at Highbury. Off the pitch the match had far greater ramifications. Manager Herbert Chapman sent first team coach George Hardy to the changing rooms for countermanding his pitchside instructions. Hardy had been appointed by Sir Henry Norris and Chapman had reportedly been looking for a way to oust Hardy and replace him with Tom Whittaker. This even became the culmination of many disgreements between manager and coach and after the match Chapman did indeed demote Hardy and replace him with Whittaker. Co-owner William Hall was sent by Norris to address the situation but Chapman wouldn't budge and the board and vice-chairman took the decision that the manager was now in soul charge of football matters. Ultimately it led to Henry Norris resigning from the club over this battle of wills and he cited Hardy in his resignation later as a defining reason. The battle between Chapman and Norris had been won and according to Whittaker's biography this is when Chapman said to him; “I'm going to make this the greatest club in the world and I'm going to make you the greatest trainer in the game.”

Highbury saw no goals today in 1929 as it ended 0-0 between Arsenal and Manchester City. Only 13,764 spectators had to endure the ninety minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday were soundly beaten at Highbury today in 1935. It finished 4-1 to Arsenal and Cliff Bastin scored while Alex James (picture top left) got the only hat trick of his Arsenal career.

Another home win for Arsenal today in 1938. The visitors were Leicester City and although they scored Arsenal replied with goals by Leslie Jones, Cliff Bastin and Ted Drake to take the points with a 3-1 victory. Outside right Mal Griffiths (picture bottom left) made his first team debut. He had played regularly in the reserves and spent some time at Arsenal's nursery club Margate. He only ever made nine first team appearances and scored five goals in those games. At the end of this season he actually left to join Leicester City for a fee of £1,250.

Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick was born in London on this date in 1940. A former colleague of Peter Hill-Wood's when they were both directors at Hambros Bank he succeed Hill-Wood in the role of chairman.

In the last season of the Football League South today in 1946 Arsenal were beaten 0-3 in London by Birmingham City.

No difficulties in Round 4 of the FA Cup on this day in 1952 when Arsenal beat Barnsley 4-0 at home. A Reg Lewis hat trick and a goal from Doug Lishman put Arsenal through to meet Leyton Orient.

No difficulty either for Arsenal at Highbury today in 1957. Their league fixture against Sheffield Wednesday ended 6-3 to the Gunners. Jimmy Bloomfield started the ball rolling before his goal was added to by a David Herd hat trick and a brace from Derek Tapscott.

Former Arsenal winger Brian Marwood celebrates his birthday today. He was born in Seaham, County Durham in 1960. Marwood joined Arsenal in 1988 and in his short stay he played 61 times and scored 17 goals. Injuries would prove his downfall and he left in 1990 but is still considered by many, one of the club's best ever short term buys.

Bobby Gould (picture top right) signed for Arsenal today in 1968. he joined from Coventry City and went on to play in 83 matches scoring 23 goals along the way. The emergence of Ray Kennedy and Charlie George pushed him down the pecking order and he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 1970 after playing no part in the Fairs Cup triumph that season.

Points shared at Highbury today in 1974 as, thanks to an Alan Ball goal, things ended 1-1 between Arsenal and Burnley.

In yet another home fixture on this date Arsenal got the win today in 1982 when they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1. Cheers for the goalscorers Graham Rix and Paul Vaessen.

Also today in 1982 former Arsenal trainee David Noble was born in Hitchin, England. He joined Arsenal in 1999 and won the FA Youth Cup in 2000 when he was man of the match in the final. After a loan spell at Watford Noble was signed by West Ham United and after a succession of clubs he is presently at Exeter City having never played for the Arsenal first team.

Rix was on target again on this day in 1983 when Arsenal were at Elland Road for their FA Cup fourth round replay against Leeds United. His goal made the final score 1-1 (the identical scoreline to the first match). In seven days time the sides would meet again and a winner would be decided.

On this day in 1984 Martin Keown (picture middle right) signed his professional papers with Arsenal. After his time away with Aston Villa and Everton he became the first player since the Second World War to 'rejoin' the club for a second time. In total Keown made 449 appearances for the club and scored eight goals before he eventually played his last match in May 2004 and was replaced by Kolo Toure. Fans voted Martin number 20 in the 50 Greatest Players list.

1985 and today Coventry City were in London. In a tight match Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals by Ian Allinson and Raphael Meade.

The Gunners were on the end of a 2-1 defeat themselves on this day in 1991 when they lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Alan Smith's goal serving to keep it tense until the final whistle. On this date in 1996 Tom Dallison was born in Dagenham, England. Arsenal persuaded the 16 year old centre back to leave West Ham United in 2012 and he joined the academy on a scholarship. By October 2013 though he was off again after having a short trial with Brighton & Hove Albion he signed a deal with them that would potentially see him stay until 2015. He had loan spells at Dartford and Braintree while there. At the time of writing this he remains at Brighton.

Today in 2001 Arsene Wenger (picture bottom right) successfully appealed against a 12 match ban for violent and threatening behaviour against referee Taylor, but still had to pay costs on the grounds that he should have presented all the evidence at the first hearing.

Victory in Arsenal's away match against Manchester City today in 2008. Eduardo scored and Emmanuel Adebayor got two goals in the 1-3 win. Adebayor had now scored in six matches on the trot.

Goals from Rhys Murphy and Luke Freeman gave Arsenal's Under 21 side a 2-2 draw away at Chelsea on this date in 2011.

A single Lukas Podolski goal was enough for a 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Emirates today in 2013. A happy start for debutante Nacho Monreal in his role as left back.

Finally, today in 2014 an Emirates crowd hailed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as he was the man that got both goals in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. In the papers that day the media hysteria suggested new loan signing Kallstrom had injured himself playing beach football (anything to try and antagonise Arsenal fans).

FEBRUARY 1ST 

On this day in 1890 Royal Arsenal were at Manor Field to play against Great Marlow (now just Marlow FC). It was a London Charity Cup match in which the Royals beat the Blues 4-1. Richard Horsington and Humphrey Barbour scored and Hope Robertson got two goals to complete the victory.

Woolwich Arsenal took a beating at Turf Moor today in 1896 in Round 1 of the FA Cup. Patrick O'Brien scored a Gunners' goal but the London team were hammered 6-1 by Burnley. Whether the scoreline was to blame or not I don't know but goalkeeper Albert Russell played his one and only offical game for the club that day (he did play in two friendlies). It was also a final appearance for striker Bob Buchanan. The Scotsman played 44 times scoring 16 times before joining Southampton St Marys in search of regular first team football.

Victory for Woolwich Arsenal today in 1902 at Saltergate. The Division 2 fixture against Chesterfield Town was won 1-3 thank to the goals of John Dick, Walter Anderson and Alex Main.

In a friendly at White Hart Lane today in 1908 Charlie Satterthwaite got the goal that gave Woolwich Arsenal a 0-1 win in front of a crowd of 10,000.

Woolwich Arsenal's exit from the FA Cup in Round 2 today in 1913 was at the hands of Liverpool. Charles Lewis scored for the Gunners but the Merseyside club went on to win 1-4 in London (There were 8,653 spectators to see the last FA Cup match at the Manor Ground). Full back Robert Evans played his second and final match during his season long stay. He left to join Clapton Orient one month before the club's first match at Highbury.

The legendary Stanley Matthews gets a mention today as he was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England on this date in 1915 and although attempts were allegedly made to sign him, he never signed for the club but warrants a mention due to being a guest player for Arsenal during World War II.

Defeat at Highbury today in 1919 in the London Combination. Wartime guest Miller and regular Wally Hardinge scored for the Gunners but the shitty Middlesex club (and very soon to bitter rivals), won the match 2-3.

Not quite Arsenal (yet) but today in 1921 after winning his appeal against a lifetime ban from football by the Football Association, Herbert Chapman was made assistant manager at Huddersfield Town. Chapman had been banned for alleged illegal payments whilst at Leeds City, a practise that was rife in football at the time.

Not a lot can be said about Arsenal's away trip to play Bolton Wanderers today in 1930 as neither side could score so it ended 0-0.

It was exactly the same fixture today in 1933 but Arsenal were a different side altogether and won this one at Burnden Park 0-4. Ernie Coleman got a hat trick and Cliff Bastin made it four.

On this date in 1935 Arsenal signed inside forward Robert 'Bobby' Davidson (picture top left) from Scottish side St Johnstone for £4,000. Before transferring to Coventry City in 1937 he played 63 times and scored 15 goals.

A home fixture for Arsenal today in 1936. The Gunners narrowly beat visitors Stoke City 1-0 through a Ted Drake goal.

Points shared today in 1939 when neither Arsenal or Wolverhampton Wanderers could find the back of the net and 0-0 it finished.

In the London War Cup today in 1941 Arsenal were at Brisbane Road to play Clapton Orient. It ended 3-3 with the Gunners' goals coming from Leslie Compton, Alf Kirchen and Cliff Bastin. In one weeks time, the replay would be a different story.

There were eight goals for the 29,145 spectators to enjoy at Highbury today in 1947. Arsenal fans had more opportunities to cheer after their team beat Manchester United 6-2. Jimmy Logie, Ian McPherson and Tom Rudkin all scored while Ronnie Rooke bagged a hat trick.

On St. George's on the island of Grenada today in 1953 Brendon Batson was born. When right back Batson signed his professional papers with Arsenal in January 1971 (after being with the club since 1969) he officialy became the first black player signed by the Arsenal. He made his league debut in November 1972 but first team appearances were always going to be few and far between as understudy to Pat Rice. After just 10 senior run outs he left to join Cambridge United in 1974. He went on to be a favourite at West Bromwich Albion and when a knee injury prematurely ended his career he moved into the administration side of the game and eventually became Deputy Chief Executive of the PFA.

On this day in 1956 striker Tommy Lawton (picture bottom left) left Arsenal for a fee of £1,000 to become player/manager of Kettering Town. He was in the twilight of his career when he signed for Arsenal from Brentford for £10,000 in 1953. He notched up 38 appearances and scored 15 times in his Arsenal days.

The next match on this date was in 1958 and was a repeat of the fixture in 1947. Manchester United were at Highbury again and this time there were nine goals in the match. Jimmy Bloomfield got a brace and David Herd and Derek Tapscott added one each but the Red Devils went one better and won the match 4-5. Incidentally this was Manchester United's last match before the Munich Air Disaster in which many of the 'Busby Babes' were killed.

On a date that seems to be becoming synonymous with United, today in 1964 Arsenal were at Old Trafford. A Billy McCulloch Arsenal goal wasn't enough and the home side won 3-1.

1969 on this day saw Nottingham Forest at Highbury. Bobby Gould's goal meant it ended 1-1 and points shared.

Also a brief mention for goalkeeper Jon Sheffield who was born today in 1969 in Coventry, England. Jon never got to play for the club after he had unsuccessful trial in the late 1980's. He spent most of his career in the lower leagues with Cambridge United, Peterborough United and Plymouth Argyle.

After a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park Arsenal faced Portsmouth at Highbury today in 1971 in a fourth round FA Cup replay. In another hard fought affair Charlie George and Peter Simpson goals were added to by a Peter Storey converted penalty for a 3-2 win and Frank McLintock would skipper his side into Round 5 to play Manchester City.

Back to the league and today in 1975 Arsenal got a 2-0 home win over Liverpool thanks to two goals by Alan Ball. Ball was substituted in the match and that saw Trevor Ross (picture top right) come on to make his Arsenal debut. The Arsenal schoolboy, then apprentice, then professional would play 66 more times and score nine goals before joining Everton for a fee of £170,000 in 1977.

Arsenal won their Division fixture today in 1986. They were at home to Luton Town and nicked it 2-1 thanks to Ian Allinson and Graham Rix's goals.

Midfielder David Hillier signed his professional papers with the club on this date in 1988 and would make a total of 143 senior appearances before moving on to Portsmouth in 1996 for a fee of £250,000.

After joining Arsenal in 1985 striker Kevin Campbell (picture middle right) signed his professional papers with the club today in 1988. 228 appearances later and 59 goals to his credit he was sold to Nottingham Forest for £3m in 1995.

February 1st 1985 is also the birthdate of Dean Shiels who was born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland. The aspiring midfielder joined Arsenal's academy in 2001 but never made it far enough through the ranks to the first team. In 2004 he left the club by mutual consent and went to Scotland, signing with Hibernian.

Today in 1992 saw the highest Highbury attendance of the season (41,703) for the league match against (guess who), Manchester United. Arsenal were at home today in 1995 to face Fabio Capello's AC Milan in the European Super Cup. This first leg ended 0-0 and Arsenal would travel to Italy in seven days for the away leg. On the bench for this first leg was one Paul Merson. It was his first return to football after time away to deal with his addicition problems. The home victory today in 2004 could have been described as fortunate. Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-1 through a Thierry Henry goal and an own goal by the Citizens. However that made it 23 unbeaten for the season (was anyone daring to dream yet?) Jose Antonio Reyes made his Arsenal debut when he came on a substitute for Dennis Bergkamp. David Seaman was given a guard of honour by both sets of players before the match and received a Lifetime Achievemnt Award from Patrick Vieira on the pitch amongst the cheers and applause of both home and away fans.

The curse of Manchester United was at Highbury again today in 2005. Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp goals turned out to be insufficient and the Gunners lost 2-4.

Defeat today in 2006 when West Ham United were at Highbury. Thierry Henry and Robert Pires both scored but the Hammers won it 2-3. Henry's goal took him past Cliff Bastin's fantastic 178 tally. At half time during the match Sol Campbell insisted on being substituted and was absent from the club for the next five days.

On this day in 2010 Sanchez Watt (picture bottom right) started a one month loan at Southend United. He made 4 appearances and returned with head an ankle injuries. Thanks Shrimpers!

Back to the Premiership and Arsenal beat Everton at the Emirates today in 2011. Andrei Arshavin and Laurent Koscielny goals combined for the 2-1 win.

There was little excitement at the Reebok Stadium today in 2012 after a 0-0 draw between Bolton Wanderers and Arsenal. Earlier in the day the Under 21 side travelled to Wales and grabbed a 0-2 win over Swansea City. Goal from Zak Ansah and Serge Gnabry secured the points and new signing Thomas Eisfeld made his debut.

Finally, today in 2015 Arsenal were at home to Aston Villa who were approaching nine hours of league football without scoring a goal. Olivier Giroud scored after seven minutes but Arsenal couldn't increase their lead before half time. The second half was a different story and after goals by Mesut Özil, Theo Walcott (his 50th for Arsenal), a converted penalty by Santi Cazorla and a first Arsenal goal for youngster Hector Bellerin it ended with a 5-0 destruction of a poor Villa side.
